Alfa Romeo History
Romeo is not just a Shakespearean character, he is also part of an Italian mechanical god, dedicated to building cars to divine standards for mortal drivers. It is an Alfa without an Omega since it began producing cars in 1910, and its activity has never been threatened with permanent cessation. The Alfa Romeo logo appears to bear the marks of early religious involvement with a red cross on a white background reminiscent of the Crusades alongside a dragon-headed serpent resembling the demonic creature slain by Saint George, but in reality it was designed by human heads with only one purpose in mind: devotion and performance.
Although the company is widely considered to be 100% Italian, its beginnings prove otherwise. The company was originally founded as Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq by French businessman Alexandre Darracq with the help of Italian investors in 1906. One of the main investors, an aristocrat known as Ugo Stella, became president of the newly formed corporate entity in Milan, which would struggle to sell cars by 1909.
Ugo then took the crucial step of creating a new automobile company in partnership with other investors and Darracq. ALFA, short for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, which translates to Lombard Automobile Factory, was a public company. The early Alfa cars were undoubtedly some impressive pieces of machinery, and helped the company succeed in making cars that appealed to the Italian market and later became a cornerstone of automotive engineering and design. In 1915, Nicola Romeo, a Neapolitan mathematics teacher, took over the company during World War I and made major changes to the factory assembly lines in order to meet the high demand for military equipment at the time.
Alfa Romeo also competed in motor racing, winning competitions since the birth of its first 24-horsepower model in 1910 – which entered the famous Sicilian Targa Florio. Soon after its spectacular debut, numerous victories followed on a number of racetracks across Europe. The huge success of Alfa Romeo models over the next five decades – whose image was largely bolstered by their outstanding performance in motor racing – did not translate into economic growth for the Italian company. As a result, Alfa Romeo was bought by Finmeccanica SpA – a government-controlled industrial group – some 50 years later, to avoid bankruptcy. However, the state did not hold on to it for long and eventually abandoned it (again) due to its financial difficulties. Before it could lose its way and move away, it was adopted by Fiat as one of the group’s subsidiaries. Alfa has been working with Fiat since 1986.
The brand is one of the few European brands currently not available in the United States, having halted all exports to the North American market in 1995. However, it may be planning a return to American soil through a mutually beneficial partnership with luxury carmaker Maserati.
